8.4.1.2  Challenges

Transfusion of unsafe blood caused by human error. Insufficient blood supply man­

agement to meet demand. The unavailability of a donor’s medical history can lead to

a lack of transparency and traceability, as depicted in Figure 8.2.

8.4.1.3  Proposed Blockchain Solution

Introduction of a blockchain solution called a blood chain system to address the

challenges and maintain an effective immutable repository. It will integrate with

blood bank applications and record transactions in the chains, like donor registra­

tion, sample collection, testing, storage, blood requisition and transfusion. The sys­

tem would provide privacy features, like donor information and test results, which

will be encrypted and available to authorized users only. Also, it will connect key

stakeholders involved in blood supply management, like donors, test centres, blood

banks and hospitals.
